I'm going to sing to rise: a timeline of transvestites in punk rock.

Rock music essentially has two patterns: seduction and disobedience. The seduction of the movements, the almost sexual act of playing an instrument; and disobedience as a foundation, whether of patterns, rules, or social limitations. This transgressive freedom has become fertile ground for dissident bodies: trans, transvestite, and non-binary people have found, in these sounds and riffs, the possibility of creating new narratives and imaginaries.

In the article “I’m going to sing to rise”, journalist Renan Guerra points out how the musical genre establishes itself as a space of transgression and freedom for different bodies and voices. Available in issue #166 of Noize magazine, which accompanies the LP CAMINHOS SELVAGENS (2025), by Catto , the article features testimonials from Verónica Vallentino , of Verónika Decide Morrer , and Gabri Eliott , of eliminadorzinho .

“I try to see my transvestite body as a rock 'n' roll body. My body performs in life when I go out in the morning to buy bread, when I'm at the bus stop, when I go for a walk. So, I believe that punk and rock allow me this place of more aggressive freedom,” reflects Verónica Vallentino.

In the playlist available to subscribers, we highlight artists who, like Catto, blur the lines between genres, such as Cláudia Wonder , Jayne County , Laura Jane Grace , Jup do Bairro , among many others.
