It's Really Good to Be Underwater

Luedji Luna's second album, released in 2020 and nominated for the 2021 Latin Grammy in the "Best Brazilian Music Album" category, is the 54th NRC title. Unlike the also celebrated Um Corpo No Mundo (2017), the Bahian singer-songwriter's quest moves away from ancestral Africa and connects with contemporary, cosmopolitan Africa. Percussions recede from the spotlight to give way to jazz-like arrangements, with striking, brittle, and fluid pianos and electric bass. In her compositions, Luedji paints nuances that range from affection to disaffection, from love to anger, from everything emotional, and through the lens of her experiences as a Black woman.
